World no. 11 Karen Khachanov has suffered a shock first-round loss in the US Open.
The Russian lost in straight sets to unseeded American Michael Mmoh, falling 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.
Khachanov’s loss comes after a semifinal run in New York last year – the best Grand Slam performance of his career to that point.
He began this Slam season with another trip to the semis in the Australian Open before reaching the quarterfinals of the French Open and missing Wimbledon through injury.
Mmoh, 24, is ranked no. 89 in the world.

Mmoh is a wild card in the tournament but is now into the second round following his win
The Saudi Arabia-born player is the son of former pro player Tony Mmoh, who reached a world ranking of no. 105.
Mmoh will face either Facundo Diaz Acosta or John Isner in the next round.
