There have been countless red carpet events throughout 2022, with even more tuxedos and gowns to walk down them. But this year it was the most daring red carpet looks that made an impression. What do we mean by daring? Those that surprised and delighted, and pushed the boundaries of what traditional red carpet attire looks like.
The beginning of the year was marked by Rihanna’s maternity looks. After revealing that she was pregnant with her first child in a paparazzi photo with A$AP Rocky and a vintage Chanel coat, Rih started delivering one bombshell look after another. For Dior’s fall 2022 show in Paris, she arrived wearing a sheer babydoll dress, a PVC coat, and patent leather boots. Even compared to the superstar’s maternity wardrobe, it was one for the books.
But we expect such drama from Rihanna. Less expected was Wesley Snipes showing up at the Oscars wearing a burgundy suit with bermuda shorts and leggings instead of full-length pants, courtesy of BOGARD by MikeB. Daring indeed.
Kim Kardashian provided the most controversial dress of the year when she arrived at the Met Gala wearing the same dress that Marilyn Monroe wore to serenade president John F. Kennedy with a rendition of “Happy Birthday.” She only wore it for her walk up the Met steps, but the conversation surrounding her decision to wear a piece of fashion history lasted much, much longer.
Timothée Chalamet can always be counted on to surprise on the red carpet. At Bones and All premiere at the Venice Film Festival, he wore a red halter and matching skinny pants by Haider Ackermann. Instantly, the internet was ablaze. His co-star, Taylor Russell has also stepped into the spotlight as a style star. At the Gotham Awards last month, Russell wore a pair of jeans on the red carpet with a white fur bolero jacket from Gucci’s spring 2004 show, designed by Tom Ford. The high-low mix has only made us more curious what the actor will wear next.
