Rose might be the first to come to mind when you think of floral scents, but jasmine, often used in aromatherapy as well as fragrance, is sensuous, alluring, and a popular note of choice for many perfumers. You’ll find it most commonly used as a middle or heart note, which is what you smell when your fragrance begins to warm up on your skin.
“The floral scent of jasmine is rich, sweet, fruity, and sensual,” Linda G. Levy, president of The Fragrance Foundation, tells BAZAAR.com. “Unlike other flowers, jasmine also has a slight animalistic edge that smells tenacious and musky.”
While jasmine flowers can be found all over, Levy notes that “jasmine grows mainly in Egypt and India where it accounts for the major global production of the world.” But what does it take to include notes of jasmine in a fragrance? “It takes six to seven million jasmine flowers to produce one kilogram of essential oil,” Levy notes. So, it’s really no surprise that the sweet-smelling notes of jasmine are actually very expensive in perfumery—and commonly found inside luxury and designer bottles.
