There are more types of fall outerwear—peacoats! Wrap coats! Chore jackets!—than most closets can accommodate. With your last hanger reserved for some form of leather jacket, I recommend a leather blazer above all the others.
I’ve found the best leather blazers so reliable because they’re a special wardrobe hybrid: structured like a wear-to-work blazer, but with the nonchalant feel of a biker jacket. Sarah Staudinger, co-founder and creative director of Staud, says they’re simply “an easy and versatile piece to layer over anything.” (On her part, Staudinger wears leather blazers with everything from sweatpants to fall dresses.)
Take a closer look at street style, and you’ll notice leather blazers are the transitional jacket de rigueur. Minimalist styles in black and brown are once again in heavy rotation, but a wider color palette and boxier, extra-oversized silhouettes have entered the outerwear chat from Balmain to Ganni. The question clearly isn’t whether to power dress with a leather blazer at all—it’s, which one will you wear the most?
