St Vincent, 18 miles x 12 miles, is a lush tropical island of steep mountains, rugged peaks, deep valleys, verdant rain forests, and cascading waterfalls, with secluded black and gold sand beaches.
The Botanical Gardens in the capital of Kingstown, founded in 1765, are the oldest in the Western Hemisphere and includes plants and a breadfruit tree brought from the South Pacific by Captain Bligh of Bounty fame. Safari tours are available to visit La Soufriere, with it's spectacular and breathtaking Crater Lake over a simmering volcano in the north of the island. The Falls of Baleine are about 60 feet high and drop into a huge circular rock-lined pool - to swim here under the falls surrounded by rocky ledges overgrown with tropical vegetation is a truly memorable experience.
St Vincent was the setting for the Hollywood blockbuster movie, "Pirates of The Caribbean", and the sets for the film have now become a tourist attraction. St Vincent provides several excellent cottage style hotels including Cobblestone Inn, originally a sugar warehouse built in 1814 on the waterfront in Kingston; Grand View Beach Hotel and Villa Lodge Hotel both overlooking Indian Bay and the Grenadines; and Sunset Shores Beach Hotel in tropical gardens and overlooking the sea.
In the south of the island overlooking the approach channel to the Grenadines, lies Young Island, a 35 acre private island paradise, a virtual tropical garden, much more than a mere resort or hotel.
Ferries depart daily from Kingston to the paradise of islands south of St Vincent known as the Grenadines and including Bequia, Mustique, Cannouan, and Union Island.
