St Barths, eons ago a desolate volcano, is now a beautiful and sought after destination by the international jetset. Some of the best beaches in the Caribbean ring this 8.3 square mile island paradise with in excess of 60 superb restaurants, including Fellini, Le Case de I'lle, Do Brazil, Terrazza, Carl Gustaf, Le Gaiac, and L'Indigo, and a plentitude of ultra-chic boutiques offering the best of Parisienne wares, alongside island craft shops, has attracted such celebrities as Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, Liza Minelli, Jack Nicholson and Claudia Schiffer and many more famous and infamous visitors.
This exclusive island has remained so, being accessible by air from major airports in the U.S.A and Europe via Puerto Rico and St Martin, or alternatively by boat from St Martin.
Superb dive sites attract the scuba divers, and sailing, windsurfing, and other watersports are available throughout the island. Beaches such as Anse de Public, Anse de Reine, Anse de Gascon, Anse des Flamands, and Le Petite Anse all have excellent beachfront restaurants.
In 1966, St Barths created five Nature Marine Reserves covering approximately 7,500 acres.
The annual St Barths Carnival takes place in February.
